OSDS HONORARY MEMBERS Millard Shelton of Monroe, Oregon He passed away on April 26, 1994 at the age of 85 years old. He was born in Scio, Oregon and was a shepherd for Oregon State University. Millard raised and trained many Border Collies in his lifetime Don Boyd Don Boyd of Selah, Washington (voted March 17, 2001) I have many fond memories of Don and Linda Boyd. Their home is always open and welcome to travelers ontheir way through. Linda is a fabulous cook and Rusty and I have spent many happy hours at the Boyd's table, feasting and talking dogs. One of my more vivid memories was one time when Don was at our place and we were all giving our dogs a spin on the sheep. We had one particular ewe that was actinga little contrary and Jim, Don's dog, was proceeding to back it around the field, much like a bulldozer. Don then made the comment, “You all talk about the definition of power….now you're looking at it.” And shure enough, watching Jim work, it truly was impressive. He just kept on walking and walking into that sheep. He never seemed too upset by the whole thing, just needed that ewe to move. Don always is willing to share his knowledge and advice to the young (and old) handlers. Because Don offered his advice in such a down to earth way, there was always a crowd of folks around his motorhome to hear what he had to say. Also, there was usually an offer of a martini come 5:00. Don loves his nightly martini! On the trial field, Don was a force to be reconded with! He and Nell or Jim and later Zig could lay down run after run. I miss seeing Don and Linda at the Trials and hope that they are doing well. Don Boyd and P-Trash Kennels, By Dawn Bailey Don Boyd watched his first sheepdog trial in Spokane, Washington in 1988. He only had a small pup at the time he bought from Scotty Stewart. As he watched all the dogs run he told Frank Ward that one day he was not only going to trial his dog but win. Don never trialled that pup but instead bought a few more that would go on to win many open trials for him. I did not meet Don till a few years later, though we both were at Spokane that weekend. I liked Don and Linda immediately, as both are just about the nicest folks you would ever want to sit next to at any SDT. Don and Linda were very generous with their RV, and always willing to lend a hand. If Don ever found out you went by his place in Yakima and did not stop, you better have a good excuse as to why you did not stop in and have lunch. One of my favorite stories is the one about the Spokane trial a few years later, Patrick (Shannahan), Michelle Weitz, Debi Peterson and Denise Shoemaker were all going back to their motel for the night. Patrick asked if he could leave all the folding chairs next to Don's RV, along with a bag or two of garbage. Don said sure and everyone went off for a good night's sleep. The next morning Patrick came back by the RV and gathered up the chairs and bags. Don made a joking comment to Linda about Patrick finally taking his trash away. Linda glanced out the RV window to just se patrick walking away with Michelle and Debi not noticing the chairs. Linda was horrified at Don's callus remark about Pat's friends and told him that was uncalled for. Don roared with laughter and could not wait to tell Patrick what Linda had said. Michelle, the best practical joker around made up sweat shirts for all of us at the trial the read-“P-Trash Kennels, Home of the Untrainable, 10800-375-GRIP”, there was a dog chasing a sheep across the front. The ladies the next day presented Don with a birthday cake and the inscription read,”To Don, Older than Dirt, From P-Trash.. The best thing I remember about Linda and Don coming to the trials was that it was always fun to see them and they always made you feel at home, evenwhen you were 2000 miles away. Hey Don, We miss you!
